Priya Ahluwalia stands at the forefront of a new wave of fashion designers, blending cultural heritage, sustainability, and diversity into the fabric of her brand, Ahluwalia. Born in south-west London to a father of Nigerian descent and a mother from India, Ahluwalia’s upbringing in a multi-cultural household, enriched by her Jamaican stepfather, laid the foundation for her unique perspective in the fashion world.
Ahluwalia graduated with a Masters in Menswear from the University of Westminster in 2018, and ever since, she has been on a mission to redefine menswear through a lens that celebrates her heritage. What sets her apart is her commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. Drawing inspiration from her diverse background, she ingeniously repurposes vintage materials, giving them a new life and meaning. In addition, she only works with factories that employ rural women and ensure fair wages. Ahluwalia has also received various accolades. In 2018, she won the prestigious H&M Design Award, which comes with a €50,000 cash prize. In 2020, she was shortlisted for the coveted LVMH Prize, further solidifying her status as a trailblazer in the menswear industry. Her designs, rooted in cultural heritage and propelled by a desire for positive change, resonate with a global audience seeking authenticity and purpose in fashion.
